Extrusion press questions

Extrusion press questions

Each answer below can be read on its own. Tonnage and configuration come from an engineering review. This page does not list an order-ready machine configuration.

Questions

The questions follow selection, tonnage, forming method, inquiry preparation, and material differences.

How do you choose an extrusion press?

Yuanchang groups extrusion equipment into direct extrusion, indirect extrusion, double-action tube extrusion, and custom engineering carried out on those three platforms. Start by confirming the main material, and whether the product is a solid profile, a bar, a hollow made with a porthole or bridge die, or a seamless tube whose inner surface is formed by a mandrel. Press tonnage and configuration cannot be decided from outline dimensions alone. Read the direct, indirect, double-action, and custom platform pages, and follow the steps in the procurement guide.

How do you make an initial tonnage assessment?

Tonnage has to be read together with section size, material flow stress, extrusion ratio, section complexity, die strategy, and the target cycle. It is not a standalone number. Larger sections, thinner walls, or more complex shapes usually require more extrusion force, and a higher extrusion ratio usually raises the force required per unit area. Direct, indirect, and double-action routes also change the equipment configuration. For a first reading, see How to Make an Initial Extrusion Press Tonnage Assessment. The final tonnage comes from an engineering review.

When do you use direct, indirect, or double-action?

In direct extrusion the metal leaves in the same direction as the main press motion, and the billet slides against the container. That platform covers solid profiles, bars, and selected hollows made with porthole, bridge, or other established die systems. In indirect extrusion the die moves toward the billet, the billet stays essentially still relative to the container, container-wall sliding friction drops, and force and temperature usually change more smoothly. A double-action press adds an independent piercing or mandrel system and is mainly for seamless tubes where the mandrel forms the inner surface. Hollows that split and re-weld are normally made on a single-action press with a porthole die, so double-action is not the default for every hollow.

What should you prepare, and how do you read an XJ model name?

Before an inquiry, write down the material and alloy, the product type, the approximate section, the output target, and any known billet size or plant limit. Mark items that are still open as to be assessed. A model name is written as an XJ series number plus nominal force in UST, for example XJ-800 (880 UST) from the published reference. The figure in parentheses is that nominal force, not a complete order configuration. Billet diameter, billet length, total power, and outline dimensions are confirmed in the final engineering solution. Use the inquiry checklist and the procurement guide.

What tonnage bands are shown for construction, automotive, and industrial profiles?

The Start a Project page lists common aluminum press ranges: Construction profiles 800–2500T, Automotive / EV 2500–5000T, and Industrial profiles 800–5000T. These are common ranges, not a single tonnage locked to an application. Copper, magnesium, other materials, and custom requirements are assessed from the project conditions. A project outside these bands can still be submitted with its own conditions.

What differences between aluminum, copper, and magnesium are already stated?

Aluminum, copper, and magnesium do not share the same flow stress or extrusion temperature window, so one press should not be assumed to cover all three. Copper alloys are usually formed at higher temperature and higher pressure, which raises the requirements for stiffness, tonnage, and die temperature resistance. Magnesium alloys are more sensitive to temperature and deformation speed, so the process window is narrower. Allowed extrusion speed also differs, and heating, billet handling, cooling, and pulling have to match the material. Those points are in Key Differences When Selecting Al, Cu and Mg Extrusion Equipment. The actual configuration still follows the specific product.

How do you send an inquiry to Yuanchang?

The inquiry form is Start a Project. Provide the material, the product, a planned tonnage if you have one, or mark it as not sure, and your contact details. The sales email is sales@yuanchang.co. The sales telephone matches the footer: +86 510 8358 2291. The inquiry checklist and the procurement guide are the preparation pages.

Is a custom press a different metal-flow method?

No. Custom and special-purpose extrusion presses are a project engineering approach, not a separate metal-flow method. The solution usually starts from a direct, indirect, or double-action platform and is tailored to that project material, product, output, quality target, plant conditions, and auxiliary interfaces. It is used when the section, cycle, space, or an existing line interface sits outside a standard platform boundary. Supply scope and acceptance are confirmed item by item in the technical agreement. See Custom and special-purpose presses.
